OOC PREFERENCES:
•CONTACT METHOD: [plurk.com profile] gelise
•THREAD-JACKING: Go for it, just take it to an inbox if it lasts longer than 10 comments
•FOURTH WALLING / CANON PUNCTURE: It's absolutely fine for other characters to have heard of the Franklin Expedition, the mystery surrounding it, the searches for it/general nonsense, as well as the events of the Terror. If someone points out that Crozier looks like an actor he'll just be flattered.
•BACKTAGGING: I'm happy to backtag and pick at a thread for a while, especially if it's character or CR-driven. My only caveat if it's an event-heavy prompt; I may drop if it's too far out from the event's end and there's been a long gap in between tags.

IC PERMISSIONS:

•OTHER / NOTES: Yes to all of the above -- so long as we chat or plot a little first! I am very flexible with everything.

CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Captain Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier
• Character Age: 58
• Character Canon: The Terror AMC
• Canon Point: The very end of the canon, a few months or so after Crozier has chosen not to reveal himself to his friend, Sir James Clark Ross, and walked away from his old life completely.

• Character History: Wiki link heeeere

• Character Personality:

— Compassion: Crozier was not always warm and open, but after a difficult rebirth he became a man who values life above all else. Crozier is deeply, sincerely compassionate. When desperation set in and the odds were stacked high against the expedition's survival, one-by-one loved ones succumbing to illness and horrors beyond imagination, Crozier gave his men everything he had left of himself just to give them something. Love in those final moments, dignity in death, promises that their names wouldn't be forgotten.

Crozier loves his men more than god loves them, even after their deaths.

— Intelligence: Crozier is deeply intelligent and has a brilliant scientific mind. He's one of the best sailors of his age, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Fellow of the Royal Society for his research on magnetism, and a pioneer of polar exploration. His journey with Sir James Clark Ross to Antarctica helped map out portions of the continent, and he spent years with the Inuit people learning their customs and language. Crozier uses his knowledge of sailing, the polar regions, and the Netsilik people to try to guide his men to salvation (with zero success, but hey, he tried!)

His intelligence extends beyond his scientific and mathematical mind to emotional awareness. When it comes to his crew he knows how to lead and encourage them, how to pull at the threads of dissidence and try to bring people back together for a common goal.

— Resilience: Facing brutal Arctic conditions, dwindling and poisoned provisions, isolation from the outside world, Crozier consistently had to make tough decisions to protect his crew and press on with something akin to optimism. When disaster after disaster struck the expedition, Crozier rallied himself and his men to not give into despair and keep moving forward.

— Melancholy: Crozier is what we'd call nowadays 'clinically depressed'. Early in the expedition he was deeply insecure despite his many years of experience and wealth of knowledge, and his entire life he’s been self-deprecating and self-loathing. At times these insecurities conflicted with the good sense he has as a veteran polar explorer, and though he might have a good point to make he would often deliver it with so much bitterness that he’d inadvertently undermine himself. The times Crozier wouldn’t lash out he’d turn inward, closing himself off to everyone, hiding away from social engagements, and steadily marching towards a booze-soaked death.

Post-addiction Crozier still suffers from his melancholic disposition, though there's more grief and survivor's guilt at play than the outright bitterness towards the world and self-loathing. He's a man who chose to turn away from the world he knew to live among the ghosts of his lost expedition; he lives in a permanent state of sadness.

— Cynicism: Crozier tends to have a cynical worldview, particularly during his darkest moments when he medicates with alcohol. He may express bitterness, insecurity, and cruelty in his interactions with others, especially those he perceives as threats or rivals. He snipes and grumbles, rages and raises his voice, bangs his fist on the table, and makes snap-judgements about his fellow officers that puts the expedition in jeopardy. Crozier responds to those who make him feel insecure with sly insults and sarcasm, and because of this outright lost the respect of his crew by outright indifference and neglect of his duties at the best of times, and hostility at the worst of times.

— Self-Doubt: Crozier's self-loathing and insecurities stem from his Irish heritage, feelings of being treated as inferior due to his background, and repeated professional setbacks. These issues contribute to his struggles with alcoholism and hesitancy to take action.

By the end of the series he's overcome most of that self-doubt to be able to effectively lead, or at least has pushed through enough of those negative thoughts to be a proper captain to his men. He still struggles with self-doubt, especially after losing every single one of his men, but has managed to figure out some halfway decent coping skills to deal with it.

• Character Skills:

•Knowledge of magnetism, particularly magnetism in the use of navigation
•Sailing (19th century, tall-ship style)
•Astronomy (more navigation, yay!)
•Arctic survival/adaptability, including knowledge on how to build shelters from/in the snow, reading the ice, understanding Arctic weather patterns and seasons
•Gathering flora and hunting fauna in the polar regions, though as he is one-handed he does better with a harpoon or a spear than, say, a bow or a olde timey pistol that needs two hands to reload
•Multilingualism - Netsilik Inuktitut and some Yupik phrases, but it shows that he's able to adapt even if he does speak these other languages with a thick Irish accent

• Character Inventory:

— A snow knife
— A little amulet of a ship carved from bone
— A tattered pair of mismatched, fingerless gloves

• Important Notes: The clothes Crozier currently wears at this time are specifically built for surviving the harsh Arctic winters: caribou parka, mittens, boots, and a tunic and pants stitched from water-repellent sealskin. Is it cheating? Maaaaaaybe. He also has one hand, so.
